Problem Solving

Solving problems in maths and other subjects addresses the need for using and applying skills. It is an integral part of the Thornhill syllabus. Solving problems involves making decisions, it is important practice for the children to apply skills in real life situations.

In solving any problems, it helps to have a working procedure. The ‘Thornhill Problem Solving Process’ outlines essential strategies. It is important that the children follow a logical and systematic approach to their problem solving. Following these four steps will enable the children to tackle problems in a structured and meaningful way.

Understand, Plan, Try It, and Look Back.

In the Foundation department, Problem Solving takes place informally across the curriculum. A more formal Thornhill Problem Solving Programme is introduced from Standard 3. Various strategies are introduced and developed throughout the senior section of the school.
