Library News

In Library lessons we are providing children with a time in their school week to pursue reading as a pleasurable activity. In these worrying and stressful times, we are trying to make Library lessons not only worthwhile, but fun.

Literacy activities in weekly Library lessons enrich our children’s lives through stories and reading. Books engage pupils in their learning – about other points of view, about the world around them, and about their own emotions and opinions, and how to give voice to these. Sustaining the joy of reading is invaluable, and even though children cannot at present borrow Library books, they are still gaining the benefit of various texts in their lessons. Reading for pleasure is what we emphasise. There is a wealth of free books online that children can read for enjoyment too. Here is an excellent link to free online reading for all ages. Simply choose a book and read.

When children read a book and listen to stories, the neurons in their brain fire overtime – deciding what the characters are wearing, how they’re standing and what being in that character’s shoes feels like. The words make suggestions. Their brains paint the picture. AND it’s fun!

We have also been running the inter-house quiz for the upper school during Library lessons with an array of general knowledge activities, quizzes and puzzles. The pupils have shown a great interest in current affairs during these quizzes. In order to continue growing our Thornhill pupils in being informed and intelligent conversationalists, I encourage you to assist your child to go onto the following fantastic link to news and current events. Children can choose their age level from Reception to Std 7 and read the news in a relevant and informative way. https://www.timeforkids.com/

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Thornhill Primary School website, filled with information which, we hope, will attract your interest and serve to give a sense of the rich flavour of life at our school.
