Std 7 Jeans for Genes
Std 7 Jeans for Genes
On Monday 16 September the Std 7 pupils wore jeans and casual wear to school to acknowledge world “Jeans for Genes Day”. This is celebrated annually to raise awareness for children and families affected by genetic conditions. It focuses on birth defects, or genetic diseases like cystic fibrosis and genetic blindness.
On the day we discussed the basics of genetics, how we inherit certain traits and features from our parents, we debated cloning and the children designed their own jeans.
The Std 7 students had completed two assignments for Science, one being to choose and research a genetic disorder. Many children chose a disorder which runs in their family and which made the assignment most relevant. The second assignment was to draw pictures of their parents highlighting certain features. They then drew a picture of themselves illustrating which feaures they had inherited from their parents.
The assignments were done beautifully and we were able to put up an amazing display for all to see.
