Std 2 Cultural Village

At the end of June, the Std 2 classes visited the Bahurutshe Cultural Village. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the ladies of the Kgotla with ululations, expressing their joy at having us there.

We were then escorted into the Kgotla, where we were shown where the chief sits and informed about his roles. We learned about the different items used in the Kgotla:

Fire: Represents life and a way to keep us warm.
Nkgwana: A small clay pot that keeps water cool and larger ones used to store food.
Mat: Used for sitting and made from animal skin.
Lefeelo: A traditional broom used to keep the area clean.

The children were also taught about their totems in relation to their home villages. They dressed in traditional clothing and were shown various types of crops harvested, such as mmidi (corn), dinawa (beans), letlhodi (mung beans), and mabele (sorghum). The children then presented different types of food to the Kgosi in a Dikgafela. A Dikgafela is a symbolic festival to appease the heavens for rain. The elderly women sang rain songs as they offered the food to the chief.

The highlight of their excursion was a donkey cart ride to see the goats. The children fed the goats and held the baby kids. The boys moulded clay into animals or utensils they saw, while the girls learned how to decorate traditional huts by smearing them with a mixture of cow dung, clay, and soil. It was a wonderful experience learning about our rich culture!

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Thornhill Primary School website, filled with information which, we hope, will attract your interest and serve to give a sense of the rich flavour of life at our school.
